My parents loved pickleball. You won’t believe that they sold our first home and searched for a new home where the house was smaller to have a larger backyard. This allowed them to build a spacious larger court (Similar to stadium size court) with amenities of sitting beside the court.
I still remember when I was child, especially on holidays and on weekends I used to spend my whole day in the court with my friends. My mother used to bring the food for us at the largest seating table just beside the court and I never left the court the whole day. This was the great privilege of having a larger court in our backyard.
Pickleball Court Dimension
The court is a rectangular size area measuring 44’ ft (13.41m) Long and 20’ ft (6.10m) Wide with Net height of 36”inches on sides and 34” inches in the center for both singles as well as doubles matches.

Pickle ball was first ever played in Bainbridge Island by 3 families on a Vacation and they made use of the existing Badminton court where they had to play the new game which is a mixture of Pingpong, Badminton and Tennis. Hence the dimensions of the pickleball court are the same as Badminton court. The difference being the Non Volley zone is unique to Pickleball compared to other sports and its size is 7 ft ( which is Service line in Badminton 6ft 6in).
Surrounding margins : How much room do you need around the pickleball court?
The minimum surrounding margin recommended by USA Pickleball is 10 ft in width x 16 ft to length. So making total surface area 30 ft (9.14 m) wide and 60 feet (18.29 m) long. The recommended indoor height clearance is 18 feet.
Purpose | Width – feet (m) | Length – feet (m) |
New Construction | 34 (10.36 m) | 64 (19.5 m) |
Tournament Play | 34 (10.36 m) | 64 (19.5 m) |
Wheelchair Play | 44 (13.41 m) | 74 (22.56 m) |
Stadium Court | 50 (15.24 m) | 80 (24.38 m) |

Note: The size for Wheelchair play in a stadium court recommended is 50 feet (15.24m) wide by 80 ft (24.38m) long.
Different areas and their size
Service Court (Left and Right) :
Service court is the region (15ft X 10ft) formed by Baseline and sidelines
after the Non Volley zone as shown in the above image. After the service the ball should land into the service court or on (Side/Baselines) not on Non volley zone line else it will be a fault.
Kitchen (Non Volley Zone) : Hitting a ball directly in air without bouncing is known as Volleying. Kitchen is the region 7 ft from the Net In which you are not allowed to Volley the ball directly.
One more important thing to note is your momentum should not carry into this area after hitting the ball otherwise it will be called a fault.
Net: The Net is located in the center at 22 feet distance its Total length of 44ft. The height of Net on both sides is 36” inches while its 34” inch in the center.
Lines – There are three types of lines i.e. Baseline, Sidelines and Centerlines in pickleball court each 2” wide.
- Baseline: It’s a boundary where you need to make sure that your foot are behind this line while you serve. It is 22 feet from the Center of the net.
- Sidelines : Sidelines are lines defining the boundary of the court along width. They are perpendicular to the net
- Centerline: The line dividing the service court into two equal parts left service court and Right service court.
Area of Pickleball court and how much land do you require ideally to build a court?
- USA Pickleball recommends minimum playing surface area 30 ft x 60 ft so its 1800 sq. ft. land area required including the margin area which could be used while converting existing tennis courts into pickleball courts.
- Whereas 34 ft x 64 ft i.e 2176 Sq. ft. (~2200 sq. ft) is preferred for new construction or tournament play.
- For wheelchairs, the above values become a minimum of 44 ft x74 ft = 3256 sq. ft. and for a stadium court to be 50 ft x 80 ft i.e. = 4000 sq. ft.
